NUCA presents cutting edge art, design and media talent in Degree Shows 2011A free extravaganza of art, design and media creativity will go on display in the centre of Norwich next week as Norwich University College of the Arts opens the doors of its campus to the public for its Degree Shows 2011.
As a hotbed of new creative talent prepares to graduate with degrees in subjects such as Illustration, Design for Publishing and Graphic Communication, the degree shows give these students the chance to showcase their work to the general public and to celebrate their achievements in the company of their peers. More increasingly the shows are becoming an important mechanism for students to display their talents to a host of both nationally and locally based employers, buyers and curators and act as bridge between student and the professional world. Many students will sell their work at the event, while others will receive job offers or commissions. Work on show will range from well established and respected courses in Fine Art, Graphic Design and Photography, to intriguing avenues of creative endeavour covered by Visual Studies and leading, cutting edge courses in the realms of digital media such as Games Art and Design. In all, courses covering 12 creative disciplines will have work on display in NUCA's buildings on Duke Street, St Georges Street and Elm Hill. For the first time this year students from Textiles and Surface Design turn The Gallery at NUCA into a retail space, where everything is for sale, and Cinema City on St Andrews Street shows additional screenings of selected films from Film and Moving Image Production students (10.30am - 12.30pm) and Animation students (12.30pm - 1pm) on Saturday 25th June. Entry for all the shows including Cinema City is free. Professor John Last, Principal of NUCA, says: "Our degree shows are a celebration of excellence, the culmination of student's undergraduate study and we are privileged to be able to share their work in a public arena. The breadth and high standard of work is impressive and reflects the broad range and quality of courses at NUCA, recently ranked as the country's number one specialist arts institution (Guardian 2011 Higher Education League Table) which has attracted a 15% increase in applications for 2011 entry. They promise a chance for the city of Norwich to enjoy the creativity, innovation and ideas of the next generation of artists, designers and media makers. "Exhibiting in a public context such as this is a test of their professional awareness and engages the business and professional skills taught alongside studio practice throughout their three years at NUCA." |
