Jonathan Colam-French PrizeThis year's recipient of the Jonathan Colam-French Scholarship is Anna Burbidge, Year 3 BA Surface Design. The top 12 students who achieved an overall mark of 72% or above at the end of Year Two were invited to submit a written statement about their work and also a selection of images. After careful consideration Anna was chosen by Jonathan to receive the scholarship award of £1,000. Higher education enables dedicated students to follow their dreams and excel in their chosen subject area. Not only will a committed and nurtured arts graduate have the skills and experience to turn their creativity into a way of life, but also their work and practice enables others to see the world in a different way. Being offered the opportunity to study art at degree level is often a student's long-held dream, however once they arrive and settle in to undergraduate life it can be hard to make ends meet or afford extra materials. Increasingly students take on a significant amount of part time work. A prize or scholarship can help reduce this pressure and encourage the student to focus on their work. As well as financial assistance, the recipient of a scholarship also benefits from the encouragement that someone else's support gives them. The feeling that a stranger is prepared to invest money in you and your work can give a student an enormous confidence boost. The University College has a distinguished historical list of supporters, including a three-year Henry Moore Fellowship in Sculpture which was introduced in 1982. |
