BA ArchitectureBuildings are metaphors for cultural and economic accomplishment and societies are often measured by the nature of their existing or surviving architectural achievements. The BA (Hons) Architecture degree course at NUCA encourages students to investigate the local as a means to understanding the global. We offer students the opportunity to study the subject within an art and design faculty in an architecturally distinguished location. The course addresses the key processes relevant to the planning, design and construction of buildings and other architectural structures and spaces. NUCA has a long established reputation as a leading institution for design education and Architecture students will benefit from this expertise. The course promotes the importance of designing fit-for-purpose and fit-for-use structures informed by contemporary environmental, material and historical factors relevant to the industry. The course exploits its geographical setting to enrich students’ learning experience by engaging with aspects of the regional environment that have resonance on a global scale. The historic city of Norwich forms the backdrop to the course, offering numerous examples of fine architecture from medieval to contemporary, which students access for reference and inspiration. The course specifically acknowledges the importance of architectural setting and 'sense of place'. We have strong links to local and regional architects practices and during their studies students will have the opportunity for internships and industry set live briefs. A series of professional guest lectures from architects, artists and designers will complement the course to ensure a professional relevant education. Technical and making skills are a key component of the curriculum; these are integrated into creative projects to enable students to learn through experience. The course specialises in enabling students to design buildings and spaces with an understanding of conservation along with environmental and global regeneration considerations. Students are taught to respond to patterns of migration and population that have influenced architecture and the demands from tourism, housing, transportation and light-industry. |
