Postgraduate
NUCA is a specialised Art, Design and Media University College with excellent workshops and facilities. Students are taught by highly qualified subject specialist academic staff alongside a wide range of visiting creative industry professionals.
Postgraduate study at NUCA emphasises learning through studio and workshop practice, critical reflection and experimentation with ideas, processes and materials. The University College promotes interdisciplinary, collaborative and industry focused study and is proud of its internationally recognised research.
Our students are immersed in a creative and challenging environment and become members of a postgraduate community that provides excellent preparation for employment and doctoral study. We encourage innovation and entrepreneurship and challenge students to participate in national and international competitions, develop business ventures and be innovative in their thinking and creativity.
Each course lasts one year on a full-time basis or two years part-time. The postgraduate year is split into three teaching blocks of 14 weeks running from October to September. Study comprises of five units:
Research into Practice (30 credits)
This initial unit allows students to gain an understanding of practice-based postgraduate study and research methods. All new full-time and part-time postgraduate students participate in this unit together.
Award Specific units (30 credits per unit)
Each course features two units where subject specialist teaching and issues are explored. You will address the themes of the unit with respect to your own specialism and will be challenged to expand and reflect upon your creative thinking and learning.
Self Negotiated Study unit (30 credits)
This unit gives an opportunity to design and conduct an independent project within a given time scale. You will negotiate the aims, schedules, resources and outcomes with your tutor. This unit will prepare you for the Masters Project unit.
Masters Project (60 credits)
You will negotiate and agree a sustained independent project that addresses the aims of postgraduate study and is specific and relevant to your course and specialism.
The Masters Degree culminates in a public exhibition of work in the final September of study.
