MA Fine Art

Fine art installation

This course enables artists to challenge and refine their practice. The MA Fine Art is multi-disciplinary and promotes critical debate and dialogue between artists working in different traditions and media, as well as between those sharing similar approaches to their practice.

Individual fine art practice is central to this course and each student is expected to rigorously explore and subsequently define his or her own objectives as an artist. The course supports studio practice, research and contextual study and encompasses the acquisition of the specialist conceptual and technical skills and knowledge that are required for the professional practitioner to pursue a career in the wider creative and cultural industries.

Depending on your area of chosen specialism, the course supports the following areas of practice and theory: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation, exhibition and curation. You may decide to explore a particular concept through various forms of practice or you may prefer to investigate a number of themes primarily through a single area of practice.

Students will have the opportunity to develop their practice and engage with a serious and responsive peer group of artists. Exhibiting is seen as a vital part of the professional practice and MA students are encouraged to exhibit both inside and outside NUCA. You will learn to consider your work, or the work of others and its presentation within a number of contexts. The role of audience and location will also be considered.

The course is geared towards those who wish to further develop their skills as well as established practitioners and is also suitable for applicants wishing to explore broader themes in relation to contemporary and historical models of fine art.
