Undergraduate
At NUCA you can study for qualifications at a number of different levels. As you read through the course profiles you will notice that some subjects are available at more than one level, so please refer back to the definitions below to help you decide which is right for you.
FOUR Year BA (HONS) degree (Year 0)
Year 0 is the first year of a four year BA (Hons) degree course. The University College offers a Year 0 learning opportunity for two of its courses - BA (Hons) Graphic Design and BA (Hons) Fine Art. You may wish to consider applying for the four year course if you have a strong commitment to your chosen specialist area of study but feel you have yet to acquire the experience and range of skills you would need to successfully undertake degree level study in three years.
Working with subject staff in specialist workshops and studios, alongside peers from all years of your chosen course as well as postgraduate students, Year 0 offers you the additional time to develop the skills and knowledge you need to successfully complete your BA (Hons) degree course.
Foundation Degrees (FdA) with optional top-up to BA (Hons)
Foundation Degrees are qualifications that combine academic study with work-related learning. You will initially study for two years on a full-time basis and on successful completion of these two years you will be awarded a Foundation Degree (FdA) qualification. You then have the option to stay at the University College and top-up to BA (Hons) degree level by undertaking a third year of study, or to graduate with a Foundation Degree (FdA) qualification.
BA (Hons) Degrees
BA (Hons) degrees are qualifications that help you develop a thorough understanding of a particular subject. They usually take three years to complete on a full-time basis and you will find you have much more of an input into the direction your learning takes than you’ve had previously. Upon completion you may decide to continue your education with a Masters Degree (MA) qualification or use your degree to help start your professional career.
