Courses are suitable for beginners as well as more experienced students.
Welcome to the 2009 / 2010 Short Course programme.
Drawing, especially life drawing, is for many people the foundation of art and design study, and our drawing courses remain extremely popular. This year we have continued with the introductory course Exploring Drawing, created a progression course in Developing Drawing, and added an exciting new course in Experimental Drawing which offers an exploration of different techniques and physical objects to discover how drawing might be combined with light, animation and found imagery.
With all our courses, we hope that the wider context of art practice and debate created for our degree students also offers Short Course students a real flavour of the University College experience.
You will receive instructions about where to arrive for the first session, and what, if any, materials or equipment you need to bring.
AUTUMN TERM 2009
Course reference SC1/09
Introduction to Water-based silkscreen printing *
Four Saturdays, 10.00-12.30 and 1.30-3.30 in the print making studio, St Georges Street
October 3rd – 24th
Tutor: Sonja Ruddick
Course fee: £180
* This course is limited to four places
This is a structured introduction to the equipment and techniques of water-based silkscreen printing. The course will start with using simple paper masks to introduce the concept of printing in layers. Then it will concentrate on the way that a multi-coloured image is built up in layers by making light sensitive stencils for more intricate and complex work, using painted marks, linear drawings, and how to incorporate textures, photocopied or digital images, and texts. Students will learn how to print their images into several coloured layers onto paper and card, and explore the effects of colour on colour.
To make a screen print, the silkscreen is attached to a printing press and ink is pushed through the mesh of the screen onto the paper using a squeegee. Each layer is printed individually, taking care to register each new layer on top of previous colours.
No previous experience of screen-printing will be required
Please note:
This course takes place in a professional workshop environment, and will require students to be standing for prolonged periods of time, and to use light industrial machinery.
Students will be operating printing machinery under supervision. Full training and a Health and Safety induction will be given prior to this. Please bring an apron.
Sonja Ruddick is the Printmaking Workshop Manager teaching at Norwich University College of the Arts.
