BA (Hons) DESIGN FOR PUBLISHING

A focus on typography and the details of design sets us apart from many other graphic design courses."

Vicki Winteringham
COURSE TUTOR

With the communication of information at its heart, this BA (Hons) Design for Publishing course explores the interrelated fields of typography, layout, pagination and formatting.

Effective publishing techniques are developed for magazines, newspapers, books, leaflets, brochures, catalogues and the web. Legibility and readability are key considerations and students’ creativity must be informed by editorial content.

A distinctive aspect of the course is that it allows students to undertake projects in a number of other design disciplines before finalising their ongoing education pathway.

LEVEL ONE

Level One provides an introduction to the Design for Publishing specialism and those of parallel design disciplines. This multi-disciplinarily approach, a foundation of the course’s success, informs students’ approaches to design. Some branch off in new directions whilst others remain committed to their original course.

LEVEL TWO

The priority is to develop deeper understanding of Design for Publishing. Students hone their skills and approaches to design practice and attain the vocational skills valued by potential employers. ‘Live’ briefs, work placements or collaborative opportunities can arise at any time on this dynamic course.

LEVEL THREE

Level Three sees students refine their creativity and professionalism. Tutors ensure students are equipped to make informed decisions about career paths or the possibilities of postgraduate education.

Alongside studio work, students undertake a dissertation of around 5,000 words.

Those that successfully complete their undergraduate studies may progress to a range of MA courses within the University College.
