BA (Hons) FILM AND VIDEO

The principles and practicalities that define the moving image must be understood by those that create it. This course provides this grounding and sets up a number of ongoing career paths.

Students realise their potential through an exploration of traditional cinema and television production together with developing forms of film and video.

Upon successful completion of this Foundation Degree students may progress to BA (Hons) Film and Video Level Three at NUCA.

LEVEL ONE

Level One provides a broad introduction to film, video and sound production. Students absorb many practical techniques including pre-production, storyboarding, script development, video camera work, lighting, film grammar, narrative conventions, genre, digital video editing, visual effects, sound recording and design, motion graphics, professional and critical studies.

By following the process from script to storyboard to screen, students develop their conceptual and creative thinking. They explore the relationship of sound design with the moving image and develop their own short production. Their ideas are compared to those
exhibited by the established media. Ideas will be compared with those established within a relevant genre.

LEVEL TWO

Level Two further develops intellectual and creative abilities whilst consolidating technical expertise. Individuals personalise their learning and embark on a major assignment to showcase chosen specialisms.

Concepts of video art, sound art, interactivity, online imagery, the relationship of work to audience are introduced at this stage. Finally students produce their own industry-relevant showreel.

The course is housed at EPIC, one of the most advanced HD broadcast facilities in Europe where students share space with industry professionals.

Students are encouraged to undertake placements in the creative industries and to engage with real world productions. Team and collaborative work is also encouraged.
