BA (Hons) SURFACE DESIGN

Surface design gives texture and colour to our world through fashion, architecture, interior and retail design. This course explores traditional and emergent approaches and leads students into relevant career paths or prepares them for further study.

The practical, project-led syllabus balances the development of hands-on creative skills with a study of materials and processes. An understanding of industry practice is provided by work placements and ‘live’ design projects. Time, given to team-working, business and Critical Studies, enables students to develop contextualised skills that employers seek.

Students who successfully complete a Foundation Degree are able to progress to BA (Hons) Surface Design Level Three at NUCA.

LEVEL ONE

An introduction to various technical and creative processes equips students to explore the possibilities of surface design in various media including paper, textiles (fashion or interior) and product design.

Project work focuses on specific issues and aims to inspire experimentation.

Practical workshop learning, including screen-printing, drawing and CAD, is underpinned by visual and contextual research.

LEVEL TWO

Students consider how their practice will apply within industries that depend upon effective surface design. There will be an emphasis on critical evaluation of students’ work. Contextual learning continues with industry projects, entry into national competitions and placements.

A self-directed final project will demonstrate students’ knowledge, both theoretical and practical.
