Student Maintenance Loans and Grants
Student Maintenance Loans
This loan helps with living costs such as accommodation, food, clothes, travel and course expenses. This loan is available to new and existing eligible UK students and the amount students receive is dependent on household income and any maintenance grant received.
A student not receiving a Maintenance Grant, living outside London and not with parents will be able to borrow up to £4,950 (2010/11) whereas those who live with their parents will be able to borrow up to £3,838 (2010/11). 72% of the loan amount is available to all eligible students and is not income assessed. The remaining 28% will be dependent on household income.
Further information on eligibility and criteria is available from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
Student Maintenance Grants
New full-time undergraduate students from lower income households are able to apply for a non-repayable Maintenance Grant of up to £2,906 a year.
- If the household income is £25,000 or less students will receive a Maintenance Grant.
- If family income is above £25,001 and below £50,020 students will receive a partial grant.
The Maintenance Grant is paid in three instalments, at the beginning of each term, directly into students’ bank accounts.
