Jerwood Contemporary Painters
Jerwood Contemporary Painters is exhibiting at The Gallery, St Georges Street Norwich NR3 1BB, Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm until the 20th February with an Artist's talk by Ryan Mosley at 2pm on the 17th of February.
The national tour of the third Jerwood Contemporary Painters exhibition brings the work of 26 emerging artists to Norwich. All the artists in the exhibition are at a particular stage of their development and have graduated since 2000. The vibrant collection of paintings is concerned with the debate about what painting is, and what it may become.
Each artist has been invited to show one selected piece of work. The selection panel for the exhibition consisted of established painters Mali Morris, Phillip Allen and Alexis Harding. Artists were sourced from across the UK and Ireland according to the selectors shared knowledge and that of their networks and contacts.
In Phillip Allen’s words, “The final selection of painters and the quality of their work is hugely impressive. We have painters who are fresh out of art school from BA or MA course; some that have a span of more than fifteen years between undergraduate and postgraduate studies; and we also have painters who have already started to build some reputation in the UK and internationally. This makes for an interesting, challenging and inspirational array of approaches and attitudes to painting.”
Each of the artists receives a minimum of £1000, not as a ‘prize’ but as a participation fee. This fee is unusual for any group show or prize, in rewarding all the artists showing in the exhibition and is an important part of nurturing serious support for artists at this critical point in their careers.
The exhibition is part of the Jerwood Visual Arts programme of awards, prizes and exhibitions that celebrates a range of disciplines across the visual arts, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photograph and digital moving image. Jerwood Visual Arts is a major initiative of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
