Digital Media

Digital technologies impact on all aspects of our lives, and art and design practices are at the forefront of creative experimentation with these technologies.

The University College fully recognises the importance of access to IT, online information and communication networks for all students and staff and has invested significantly in hardware and software that is professionally relevant and suitable for the diverse range of academic opportunities offered here.

DIGITAL MEDIA FACILITIES

There are opportunities to access IT resources in the workshops, the Library, computer-teaching rooms, seminar rooms with networked terminals, and numerous computer terminals available throughout the different buildings. A centrally located Student IT Helpdesk provides advice and support for using the IT resources, including email.

Students' work can be output to a wide variety of media, including DVD, laser and large format inkjet printing on an extensive choice of papers and textiles. Complementary hardware such as high end scanners, digital cameras and DV capture workstations contribute further to a fully integrated resource for creative origination, manipulation and development of creative projects.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The use of the growing number of on-line sources for the specialist study of art and design is supported by offering access to the internet across the College. Use of the Library catalogues and study guides is through a web-based system and students are able to access an expanding number of web-based art and design databases. The intranet, available both on and off site, provides access to course and student support information, and the virtual learning environment (VLE) is being developed to facilitate interactive on-line learning. Through the managed learning environment (MLE) students have access to a developing range of information sources, including personal assessment results. Every student is provided with an email address to use during their studies, which can be accessed anywhere through the web.
