Student Union

The purpose of the Student Union is to support and represent students and make their experience of the University College as exciting and rewarding as possible. The Union is also responsible for all student involvement; this ranges from coordinating Student Representatives and aiding communication with NUCA management, to planning events and sustaining clubs and societies.

The Student Union works alongside NUCA to ensure that students have input into top-level meetings where decisions are made about how students are taught, the resources they have access to and the type of support they receive. The Student Union holds a place on the Board of Governors and has a strong working relationship with the Principal. This means that student views are heard and represented to the highest level.

The Student Union also helps to run the Student Representative system. Student Representatives are elected from each year group and every course at NUCA. They attend meetings with course leaders and tutors and are a part of the Student Reps Group that meets with NUCA senior management. Reps communicate the views of students on their course and feedback important information to their peers.

All students are eligible to run for a Student Rep position and by being involved develop key skills, such as effective communication, time management and good organisation.

NUCA Student Union is affiliated with NUS (the National Union of Students), which enables the Student Union to give students a national voice and work collectively with Unions all over the UK. Whether it’s student housing, top-up fees or equality and diversity, the Student Union at NUCA works with NUS to improve students’ lives.

The Student Union supports all student clubs, societies and committees. It publishes the very successful student magazine Storehouse, which is designed, funded and distributed by students and showcases student work. 1,000 issues are released termly and all students can get involved. The Student Union also has a successful mixed Rugby Team which plays in local leagues. The vibrant Events Committee helps organise events for students such as the Christmas Ball and termly theme nights in the distinctive Student Union Bar. There are also opportunities to be involved in the Campaigns Committee and help raise awareness for issues that effect students.

The Student Union provides confidential help, support and advice on all matters regarding the student experience.
